Utilizamos las formas There was y there were para expresar haber en pasado. A diferencia del español si hay distinción entre singular y plural

 

Ejemplo

 

 

Había una mujer en el parque	Había dos mujeres en una cafetería
Afirmaciones
There was a woman in the park	There were two women in a cafe
Negaciones
No Había una mujer en el parque	No Había dos mujeres en una cafetería
There wasn’t a woman in the park	There weren’t two women in a cafe
Preguntas
¿Había una mujer en el parque?	¿Habia dos mujeres en una cafetería?
Was there a woman in the park?	Where there two women in a café?
Como respondemos
Was there a woman in the park?	Where there two women in a café?
Yes, there was  / No, there wasn´t	Yes, there were   /  No, there weren’t

 

 

Utilizamos “there was” cuando hablamos en singular. Sin embargo, si hablamos en singular utilizamos “there were”.

Para hacer las negaciones negamos el verbo “to be” añadiendo la partícula “not” detrás del verbo o con la forma contraída.

Para la formación de preguntas necesitamos invertir el verbo “to be” y la particula “there”, tal como vemos en el ejemplo

 

Las respuestas cortas son muy comunes, porque cuando hablamos evitamos repetir la pregunta completa.

 

Recuerda que el verbo “haber” en español es impersonal y por lo tanto no hay diferencia entre singular y plural.

Utilizamos las formas completas para las respuestas cortas afirmativas

En las respuestas cortas negativas utilizaremos las formas contraídas.

 

Incontables:

Wáter, gasolina, sand, pollution, Money, salt, sugar, fine, music, art, electricity, oil, forniture, milk,

everything, something, nothing, anything, everybody, somebody, anybody, no body

 

Para incontables se usa there was

Negativo
	There wasn't a shop	No había una tienda
	There weren't any shops	No habían tiendas
	There wasn’t a computer	No Había una computadora
Interrogativo
	Were there any kids at the park yesterday?	¿Había niños en el parque ayer?
	Was there a party?	¿Hubo una fiesta?
	Was there a lot of food at the party?	¿Había mucha comida en la fiesta?
